Italian glassware is unique: the purity
of Italian glassware interacts continuously with natural and
artificial lighting creating a magical atmosphere. The
traditional skills and secrets for creating handsome coffee
tables, beautiful mirrors, handicraft glasswork and Italian
glassware are unique to the city of Venice, undisputed home
of master glassmakers and glass artists. Pliny tells us a
legend in which Roman seaman, preparing to cook their meal
on a beach, set their pots on top of stones. As the cooking
fire heated both these stones and the sand below, a
never-seen-before liquid began to flow and that was the
origin of glass and certainly of Italian glassware.
The Italian Renaissance saw Venice and Murano become centers
of glass making, with kings and queens seeking out Italian
glassware creations. Venice had established itself as a
glassmaking center as early as 450 AD. Starting with glass
mosaic tiles, glassmaking continued to flourish in Venice.
Venetian glass and Italian glassware have dominated
the European glass-making industry for hundreds of years. |
